Will Instagram label this Mumbai home by Etica Design ‘Very Demure’?

The “Very Demure” trend is sweeping across Instagram. Whether it’s portraits, home interiors or vacation snapshots, you are bound to see this phrase making an appearance. And for now, we are all up for it.

The dictionary would describe “demure” as someone who is shy and modest. In the digital landscape, however, “demure” has come to represent more than just a descriptor—it signifies a distinguished mindset, a conscious lifestyle and a refined way of being. It’s cute, it’s dainty, it’s fresh.

And this home by Etica Design in Mumbai, checks it all out.

Upon ingress, one is immediately enveloped by an expansive open-plan living area. The foyer transitions into the living quarters and an open-concept kitchen, orchestrating an environment that is both multi-faceted and interlinked. The diverse communal spaces—comprising the foyer, living area, kitchen island, dining alcove, and reading nook—though varied in their emotive character, interrelate fluidly. This cohesion is achieved through an assemblage of bespoke furnishings and custom-designed pieces, each crafted to complement its specific locale.

A defining feature of the living space is a bespoke landscape wall covering. This artistic focal point not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also imbues the space with an illusion of the outdoors. As a grand art installation, the wall covering commands the room’s visual narrative, with the surrounding elements designed to enhance rather than overshadow it. The decor maintains a neutral palette with minimalist modern accents, ensuring that the wall covering remains the centerpiece of the room.

At the nucleus of the home lies the open-style kitchen. The island serves as a versatile platform for gastronomic experimentation, convivial gatherings, and spirited dialogues. In this space, the pleasures of culinary creation and communal dining are intertwined.

Situated in a thoughtfully designed corner, a cosy reading nook graces the space, arranged around a marble mantel. This feature serves a dual purpose: as a curated mini library and as an ideal retreat for morning coffee. The mantel offers a vantage point overlooking a picturesque window, transforming the nook into a space for reflection and repose.

Adorned with plush textiles, serene hues, and artfully curated decor, each room is a personalised haven. The bespoke furniture and unique artwork adds a distinct character, resonating with the individuality of its occupants and fostering an ambiance of serene repose.

The home presents a distinctive amalgamation of subtle theatricality, unique forms and refined modernism. Architectural elements such as arches adds complex character, while textiles and rugs introduce a layer of dramatic flair.

Will you label this home “very demure”?
