This 9,000 sq ft residence by Untitled Design is the perfect modern home—rooted in history yet designed for today

In the heart of Gurugram’s urban landscape stands Katha Tarana, a four-bedroom residence that challenges the notion of modern luxury homes. Unlike the typical glass-and-steel structures dotting the city’s skyline, this home tells a different story. Designed by Untitled Design, this residence is inspired by the essence of “Katha” (stories) and “Tarana” (a final abode), encapsulating the tales of generations past while embracing the contemporary lifestyle of its inhabitants.

Breaking Traditional Boundaries

The residence defies conventional formal layouts. Instead of rigid separations, the living spaces flow into one another through innovative fabric-sandwiched screens that can transform multiple rooms into a single L-shaped space. This flexibility reflects the family’s desire for a more casual, connected living environment.

The entrance sets the tone for the artistic journey that follows. Visitors are greeted by Girjesh Kumar Singh’s thought-provoking installation, “Often I find myself near the doors that allow me to leave,” backed by custom stone panels. The grand entry door, adorned with organic wooden paneling and brass inlay, leads to a thoughtfully designed foyer featuring a Shola and ceramic art installation from Untitled Design’s Shola Art series, symbolising the ‘Tilak of Shiva.’ Adjacent lies the puja room, its walls graced with contemporary Pahari miniature art created in collaboration with Padmashree artist Jay Prakash.

The Heart of the Home

The double-height lounge serves as the heart of Katha Tarana, featuring a 40-foot wall adorned with a Mysore wooden marquetry mural depicting horses in traditional regalia. This space is anchored by Indian sandstone panels and solid wood accents, complemented by Czechoslovakian pendant lights that add a touch of industrial elegance. Kalighat paintings from West Bengal infuse the lounge with bold, women-centric narratives, adding a layer of cultural depth.

A striking stepwell-inspired installation, reminiscent of the traditional Chand Baori, greets visitors upon entering the lounge. Thoughtfully placed according to Vastu principles, it symbolises life and creation while grounding the space in Indian tradition.

Personal Touches in Private Spaces

The private areas of the home maintain the delicate balance between functionality and artistic expression. Each bedroom reveals its occupant’s personality through bold features set against neutral backdrops. The guest bedroom showcases a unique cane-and-mirror installation created with artist Priankya Narula, while the children’s room features playful Kirigami wall installations in Parchment Leather by Ankon Mitra of Hexagram.

The primary bedroom incorporates antique columns from Kochi and features a textured brass door, creating a space that honors the past while embracing modern comfort. Storage solutions throughout the private spaces showcase Indian crafts like Tarkaashi and Veneer Marquetry, proving that functionality need not compromise artistic integrity.

In a city known for its rapid transformation, Katha Tarana by Untitled Design stands as a reminder that the most meaningful spaces are those that tell stories—of family, of tradition, and of the continuous dialogue between past and present.
