Scandinavian design has fascinated the hearts and eyes of décor enthusiasts worldwide long before the advent of mega conglomerates that rule the industry in this segment today. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Nordic countries, this design philosophy has evolved alongside the modernist movements of Europe and America. From its Golden Age spanning the 1930s to the 1970s, Scandinavian design is experiencing a renaissance, celebrated for its uniquely sleek yet cosy aesthetic that continues to enthrall minimalism aficionados today. This home in Ahmedabad, designed by Studio Deshi, follows the same trend (with an Indian touch), offering the family a respite from the constant bustle beyond its walls.
There is not much happening in the room, and yet there is a lot. With a window drawing in most of the light, the living room maintains brightness throughout the day with its light-reflecting interiors. The only pops of colour come from the pillows and paintings, offering instant calm to the eyes. Moving further into the home, one would notice the distinction between private and communal areas.
On the opposite side, the dining area features a bench with a rotating backrest. The colour palette is restrained to red and brown, complemented by minimal furniture and lined patterns that guard ones interest. Positioned at the heart of the home, the kitchen boasts sumptuous features and patterned flooring that distinguish it as the focal point of daily life.
The private quarters of the home are equally impressive, featuring two personalised primary bedrooms with innovative space-utilising designs. The son’s room ingeniously combines functionality with aesthetic appeal, using sliding doors to create distinct zones for study and relaxation. Meanwhile, the daughter’s room features a striking blend of Indo-Nordic design elements, from its Ikat-print headboard to cane shutters that merge two distinct design sensibilities.
Minimal design coupled with a soothing palette of neutral tones accented with earthy hues, create an ambiance that is both inviting and serene. The thoughtful integration of traditional Indian prints and materials like oak wood and cane adds cultural depth without compromising the Scandinavian-inspired simplicity.
In a rapidly urbanising landscape where living spaces are increasingly compact, this home is a masterclass in adaptable design. It embodies the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, nurturing the soul and inspiring a sense of peace and contentment.
