Straight out of a period drama: This South Delhi home by Villa Ortiga is where different cultural influences converge

In the bustling heart of South Delhi, where politics, culture and design shape the demographic landscape, this home by Villa Ortiga is crafted to provide a respite from the tumult outside. Designed for a smartphone company professional and his family of four, this 4,500 sq ft duplex residence sits atop a low-rise complex, boasting a vast private terrace with a panoramic view of the city’s skyline. Beyond its impressive dimensions, what truly distinguishes this residence is its underlying concept—a space dedicated to fostering meaningful conversations and family interactions.

A design feast

Designed to embrace its natural surroundings, the greens around become integral design elements for the space. Natural light streams in through floor-to-ceiling glass doors, creating an illusion of space. Warm earthy tones dominate the space, with reddish-brown hues in the rug, warm grey furnishings and wood furniture. An antique bench and two identical lamps flank the sofa, setting the stage for the visual aesthetics within.“Various curios are carefully curated and displayed throughout this home, showcasing the owner’s love of art and design” says the designer.

In today’s world of design, where individuality is considered the way forward, homes crafted with a melange of styles often intrigue. Such is the case with this residence, where an eclectic blend of transitional, eclectic and Art Deco influences converge. Here, every corner tells a story and collectively forms the identity.

Within the living areas, wooden-framed arches and sliding partitions connect the formal and family spaces, offering versatility without sacrificing intimacy. A chaise lounge in the family room, accompanied by an array of antique chests that inject a playful touch to the space. Natural light steams inside through wooden-framed openings, acting as an active element.

An art lover’s paradise

Adjacent to the living areas, the dining space with an eight seater dining table is like a design exhibit. Here, one can find a fusion of elements—from an ornate chandelier to an art wall. With light streaming in through the sheer curtains from one end and the caricatures taking up the other; this space is a design lover’s gallery. The wall in gray is the underdog. It stays simple for the decor to shine. Outside, a sun-drenched patio extends the dining experience, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

Ascend the helical staircase, one that is typical of South Delhi homes in Indian series, to the upper floor, where mirrored arches amplify the sense of space, drawing the eye towards the private quarters beyond.

But perhaps the pièce de résistance lies atop the residence—the topmost floor, where an alfresco space awaits. With a pergola, floral wall installation and an indoor lounge, this space is tailor-made for both entertaining and quiet contemplation. Here, amidst curated curiosities and striking design elements, the essence of the homeowner’s passion for art and design truly shines through.

The bedrooms continue the same “all walls gray” theme, but this time with a twist. It’s floral. Adding character to this private space, where once again the residents personal taste becomes evident, is a wooden book stand (one that looks like it was sourced from back in time) holding one of the corners. The wooden flooring offers a chance for the furniture and decor to outshine in their glory. Adding a pinch of drama is the sunlight peeking in through the curtains every now and then.

Different eras, styles and cultural influences converge to bring this abode to life. From the presence of animal sculptures to the carefully curated artworks, every element plays its part in weaving this family abode.
