Paradise of the woods: This Mumbai home by House of Quirks is a treat for all nature lovers

In the heart of Mumbai lies a home where wood takes center stage. Yes, louvers, furniture and even decor—there is wood in every corner of this house. A dark teak door swings open to this abode by Vrinda Khaitan of House of Quirks. This 3,500 sq. ft. residence is an exploration of textures, colours and cultural narratives.

“The major challenge was the timeline. The space was designed, built and handed over in seven months,” says Vrinda Khaitan, Principal Designer at House of Quirks.

In the foyer, tropical wallpaper and a vintage console set the tone for what lies beyond. The interplay of materials is palpable, from the cement grey tiles with brass patti detailing to the carved Indian teak furniture that adorns the living and dining areas. Here, hints of cane, printed upholstery and textured elements create a welcoming space that beckons both relaxation and conviviality.

The passage, a connective thread between spaces, branches into two distinct directions. To the right, there is the kitchen, guest room, master room and more—all designed with functionality and comfort in mind. Meanwhile, the left passage leads to an informal living area, study space, and utility rooms, each corner curated to reflect the unique personality of its inhabitants.

In the master bedroom, an elaborate poster bed takes center stage, flanked by clean side tables and a corner study unit adorned with louvered and arched bookshelf shutters. The younger son’s room bursts with youthful energy, while the older son’s space is designed to be more subtle and calming.

Throughout the design process, sustainability was a guiding principle. Local materials, Indian handicrafts, LED lighting and water-based paints were employed to minimise environmental impact. Despite the challenges of a tight timeline, the designers executed their vision with precision and finesse, delivering a home that is as functional as it is stylish.

This home is more than just a house—it’s a reflection of the people who inhabit it. From the warmth of the living room to the master bedroom, every corner tells a story. In this narrative of design and functionality, comfort reigns supreme, crafting a home that is not only beautiful but truly livable.
