Nestled in the vibrant urban landscape of Coimbatore, this home by Outlined Architects is specifically tailored for a young couple. The residence is ingeniously divided across three floors, each catering to specific needs and enhancing the overall living experience. The ground floor serves as a multifunctional space, accommodating parking facilities and a two-bedroom unit available for rental purposes. This practical layout not only maximises the utility of the space but also ensures convenience for occupants and visitors alike.
Upon entering, the first to greet is the meticulously crafted staircase that serves as the centerpiece of the home’s design. This staircase, crowned by a skylight, not only visually connects the floors but also facilitates natural light penetration, creating a sense of openness and warmth throughout the interior. “We have a fondness for staircases and consistently incorporate unique and iconic designs in all our projects. This stems from recognising the staircase as a pivotal element that vertically connects spaces for people” says the team at Outlined Architects.
Ascending to the first floor, a spacious sit out area awaits, designed to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This semi-outdoor space is adorned with landscaped elements. Adjacent to the sit-out lies an expansive living area, complemented by a sculpted puja unit.
The open kitchen and dining area, integrated into the living space, embody the concept of open planning—a key element in fulfilling the home owners’ desire for a well-ventilated space. The master bedroom on this floor features a balcony extension, offering panoramic views and enhancing the spatial experience for its occupants.
Transitioning to the second floor, a family space connects the three bedrooms, ensuring privacy while fostering a sense of togetherness. A compact terrace on this level provides sweeping views of the surrounding urban landscape, serving as a communal gathering spot during evenings.

The exterior facade, characterised by Porotherm blocks used as a jali wall, not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also serves practical purposes such as air filtration and temperature regulation. The use of natural materials such as terracotta, wood and green accents, combined with a palette of neutral tones and turquoise blue accents, further enriches the visual appeal of the interiors.
In terms of sustainability, the architects strategically planned the layout to minimise energy consumption. By orienting less occupied spaces towards the east and integrating stack ventilation systems, the abode efficiently mitigates heat gain and promotes natural airflow—a crucial consideration in the region’s climate.
Despite the challenges posed by executing unconventional design elements, such as jali walls and intricate metalwork, Outlined Architects’ meticulous approach ensured that every detail of Athulyam was realised according to the envisioned design. This commitment to craftsmanship and design integrity sets Athulyam apart as a distinctive example of contemporary urban living in Coimbatore.
This home epitomises the convergence of modern aesthetics, functional design and sustainable practices—a testament to Outlined Architects’ vision and their ability to transform concepts into remarkable residential spaces.
