This Mumbai home by Rasneet Anand is inspired by bed-and-breakfasts abroad

You have to agree — some of our fondest travel memories are not at those fancy hotel chains but rather at intimate bed-and-breakfasts. It’s those warm inns with local architecture, welcoming hosts who feel like family, and, of course, the delicious local cuisine that truly leave a lasting impression. When the owner of this Mumbai home approached Rasneet Anand, Principal Architect of her namesake firm, she had a clear directive: to recreate the warm, inviting ambiance of the bed-and-breakfasts they cherished during their travels abroad.

A passage adorned with English shuttered cabinets and an antique mirror console sets the stage, providing ample storage solutions that cater to the needs of a growing family. Above, the ceiling’s charming grey and white stripes add character and continuity.

Continuing through the home, the layout unfolds intuitively. To the right lies the master suite, thoughtfully divided into distinct zones—a sleeping area and a spacious walk-in wardrobe discreetly concealed behind a TV partition. This wardrobe, accessible from both sides, features white arches and seamlessly integrates the master bathroom doors, optimising space and functionality. Natural light floods the room through an attached balcony.

The living room is a linear expanse with a curved couch on the left, a dining nook, and a well-appointed kitchen on the right. A small foyer leads to the children’s bedrooms, strategically placed for privacy and designed with a thoughtful layout that caters to familial bonds.

The design ethos eschewed passing trends in favor of timeless designs. The resulting blend of chic modern aesthetics and quaint charm—a haven where every detail, from snug bedrooms to communal spaces, nurtures a sense of togetherness and well-being.

Throughout the project, careful attention was paid to material selection and detailing. Warm grey marble flooring spans the home, providing a cohesive foundation. Pristine white walls and oak wood elements create a neutral backdrop that enhances the space’s openness and versatility. Delicate accents like French moldings and rattan furnishings add texture and visual interest.

In terms of sustainability, the design incorporates thoughtful practices that promote longevity and environmental consciousness, though specific features weren’t detailed.

“I thoroughly enjoyed designing both kids’ bedrooms. The son’s space theme was a delightful challenge, incorporating a navy blue base wallpaper with warm oak wood and fresh white-hued wardrobes. We kept the design playful yet timeless by avoiding additional colours” says Rasneet.

Although the home employs materials with varied patterns, the pristine white unifies the house. The palette subtly highlights the comforting nature of bed and breakfasts. Its non-rigidity is characteristic of the clients’ lifestyles and successfully reflects their personalities.
