This Mumbai home by Pree D’Fine is a lesson in balancing contrasts

Some homes resonate with the vibrant cadence of city life, while others provide a serene refuge from its relentless pace. But only a few can master both. This 2,100 sq ft Mumbai residence (dubbed Chroma Casa) by Preetu Muley of Pree D’Fine, boldly navigates the interplay between audacious colours and a restrained palette. The space juxtaposes striking, vivid hues with more subdued, muted tones, while carefully chosen accent furniture tempers the boldness with its subtle appeal. The result is a home that pulses with energy, reflecting a balance between dynamism and stillness.

One of the first features that seizes the eye is the home’s audacious colour palette. Lush olive greens intertwine with sumptuous burgundy accents, while muted mustard and rustic terracotta craft a textured canvas. Vivid splashes of teal and indigo infuse the space with energy, while subtle hints of metallic brass and gold introduce an air of magnificence.

As one enters, the bespoke details of the home are immediately apparent. The main entrance door, a key feature of the design, is equipped with a safety door that offers visibility without compromising security. The door also features biometric access, ensuring ease of entry for all family members, including children and the elderly.

The living room is designed to feel open and connected, yet distinct from the dining and hallway areas. Instead of relying on traditional furniture designs, Preetu chose to embrace organic, flowing forms that make the space feel natural and unstructured. The olive-green walls give the room a warm, welcoming atmosphere, while the neutral tones of the furniture keep the space grounded and balanced.

After experiencing termite issues in their previous home, the family requested a kitchen that would be resistant to pests. Designed by Verantes Living, this kitchen is entirely wood-free, making it durable and easy to maintain. Its modern, sleek look contrasts beautifully with the warmer, more organic materials used in other areas of the house, bringing a sense of freshness to the space.

Just when one thinks they have seen it all, and that nothing can amaze them anymore, a new design element can jump out to surprise. In this home it was the poster bed. Not there to camouflage but to stand there in full glory directing the design of the entire space.

The soft shades of beige and grey create a calming, peaceful environment for the bed framed by a textured mauve wall. To accommodate the couple’s unique lifestyle—where one partner often rests while the other is active—Preetu incorporated soundproof doors between the bedroom, walk-in closet and adjoining rooms. This ensures that each person can move about without disturbing the other.

Smart lighting further enhances the room’s peaceful atmosphere, adjusting to suit different moods and needs. A simple study nook adds to the room’s practicality without overwhelming the design.

As a budding ballerina, the daughter needed a room that could accommodate both her academic studies and her musical pursuits. The space is equipped with plenty of storage for her instruments and equipment, while the design maintains the same balance of creativity and functionality that defines the rest of the home. It’s a space where inspiration can flow freely, providing an ideal environment for both learning and artistic expression.

An unexpected burst of burgundy turns even the corridor into a lively space. The passage also serves as a display for the wife’s extensive stationery collection, adding a personal touch that makes it feel like more than just a transitional space.

Chroma Casa is filled with unique, custom-designed features that reflect the family’s love for travel and personal expression. One standout feature is the custom leather trunks, which double as storage units. These trunks are not just functional but also add character to the space, serving as both decorative pieces and practical storage solutions.

The family room, or “den,” is designed to serve as a private retreat for family members who want a quiet place to unwind. Equipped with a sofa, a small desk for work or hobbies, and an AV system for entertainment, it offers a perfect balance of solitude and functionality. Though it remains veiled, it still feels connected to the larger home, maintaining a sense of openness and flow.
