In the vibrant milieu of Mumbai, a home curated by the eminent designer Preshita Devi of The Design Chapel unfurls as a paragon of opulent restraint and functional artistry. This abode is a sanctuary where elongated living and dining spaces converge with an air of understated grandeur. Through judicious civil alterations, the residence redefines traditional layouts, enhancing bedrooms and extending balconies to orchestrate a seamless flow of space. The design narrative, marked by a harmonious interplay of textures and patterns, unveils a tableau of modern luxury, embodying both aesthetic splendor and practical innovation.
As we approach the entrance, we are greeted by a bespoke peach pink console, a piece meticulously designed to set the tone for the rest of the home. Each leg of the console features a unique design, making it more than just a functional element but an artistic introduction. The console’s polyurethane (PU) finish imparts a premium sheen, while fluted accents on either side of the passage nod to classical design. This subtle touch of texture creates a refined visual rhythm that is carried through the space. The balance between maximal and minimal elements is exemplified here, with a simple bookshelf positioned alongside a marble-clad TV panel. Soft neutral tones on the walls provide a serene backdrop that complements the plush sofas and armchairs, adorned in luxurious fabrics.
Moving into the expansive living space, we encounter the dining area, which serves as a focal point of comfort and aesthetic finesse. An exquisite dining table surrounded by mauve upholstered chairs contrasts beautifully with the rest of the space. Above, a stunning chandelier casts a warm glow over the marble dining table. A strategically placed mirror-integrated panel on the back wall enhances the sense of space and reflects natural light from the windows, making the area feel even more expansive. This area is designed as a gathering space for family, combining comfort with elegance. The communal washroom adjacent to this area features a harmonious blend of sage green handmade clay tiles and grey terrazzo, balanced by light grey floor tiles.
The kitchen, a culinary haven, features sleek countertops and ample storage. The design showcases a muted blue color palette, with dado patterns highlighted yet harmonized by a grey countertop. Subtle blue flooring and storage create a balanced scheme, accentuated by black knobs. This careful attention to color and detail extends to every aspect of the kitchen, ensuring a cohesive and functional space.
Entering the master bedroom, we are enveloped in a forest-inspired palette of blues, pinks, and greens. The thoughtful alteration of the space includes the incorporation of a balcony, allowing abundant natural light to flood the room. A dedicated memory wall adorned with family photos sits above a blue-patterned console. A blue dresser, patterned flooring, and an abstract rug from Asian Paints add to the room’s charm. Upholstered in Sabyasachi fabric, the dresser pouf and high back chair contrast beautifully with floral curtains. The Sabyasachi tropical wallpaper serves as a backdrop for the custom-designed bed head, contributing to a festive atmosphere. The room achieves a sense of balance, where each element stands proud yet works seamlessly together, with hints of gold subtly elevating the aesthetic.
The bathroom offers a delightful blend of peach-colored storage and walls, contrasted with dynamic black and white patterned tiles. Transparent drop-shaped hanging lights draw attention to the vibrant colors, adding sophistication to the space.
Inspired by the son’s love for Lego, this room features inventive design elements like Lego-themed storage shutters and handles, as well as shelves and niches. A balcony has been transformed into a functional seating nook, demonstrating the team’s commitment to practical alterations. Checkered curtains and black-framed glass storage, accented by muted colors, harmonize to create a playful yet stylish environment.
In the post-COVID era, the need for a dedicated home workspace became apparent. A small room was transformed into a multifunctional space that serves as both a home library and a mandir. Featuring a sophisticated color scheme of mauve, black, and wood, with touches of gold, this room includes an entire wall of storage combining black-framed glass shutters with wooden ones, a loft, and a soundproof door. It has become a personal sanctuary for the man of the house.
The guest room features a delightful repetition of fluted patterns through a tasteful combination of grey and lime yellow hues. The Sabyasachi wallpaper used on the sleek wooden TV unit and dresser harmonizes with the wardrobes, creating a highlight against the otherwise plain walls. The mauve upholstered bed back integrates subtly into the overall color scheme of the house. A modern pichwai from Studio Artemist, along with a hanging corner lamp from White Teak, adds an artful ambiance to the room.
The design features a rich palette of colors, patterns, and textures. The selection of materials includes luxurious fabrics, bespoke wallpapers, and a thoughtful color scheme that balances vibrancy with tranquility. Art, accessories, and decorative lights are carefully curated to create a visually stimulating environment that remains harmonious and engaging.
The residence integrates large windows, skylights, and open spaces to enhance natural light and reduce reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. These elements contribute to the home’s aesthetic appeal and sustainability.
The design ethos of creating a seamless integration of comfort, stylistic preferences, and functionality aligns perfectly with the needs of contemporary living in Mumbai. The design prioritizes natural light and ventilation, reflecting the city’s tropical climate and high population density. The challenge was to infuse the space with aspirational opulence while maintaining thematic coherence, ensuring that the final composition was a harmonious symphony of design elements.
The primary challenge was to curate a sophisticated space without falling into the trap of fleeting trends. The key was maintaining a unified design language while allowing for distinctiveness in each space. By employing a layering approach, the team created a rich tapestry of textures and motifs, ensuring a cohesive yet diverse design narrative.
