A grand entrance featuring a majestic Indian arched door marks the entryway to the 14th century A.D. (well, not literally). Adorned with intricate geometric motifs, this gateway sets the tone for the cultural voyage that awaits at Loya by Fab Interiors, a restaurant in New Delhi. Passing through, you find yourself in a serene waiting lounge, where traditional jalis enhance visual intrigue. The vibrant upholstery and low-profile furniture offer a cosy, welcoming environment.
Transitioning from the lounge, you enter the bar area. Here, a tranquil waterfall surrounded by textured stone captures your senses. This feature symbolises the historical importance of water on ancient travel routes, its soothing sound adding a layer of serenity to the space. Overhead, rhythmic wooden battens unify the ceiling, blending continuity with distinct character.
Moving into the dining area, you’re greeted by vibrant murals depicting turbaned merchants and coloUrful dhurries (heavy cotton rugs). These elements evoke the bustling energy of historic bazaars. Handcrafted finishes and meticulously arranged seating enhance the immersive experience, celebrating the vibrant cultural heritage of North India’s ancient trade routes.
The project was inspired by the Taj Group of Hotels’ vision to revive the essence of “A Journey Through the North.” The design reflects the rich heritage of the 15th and 16th-century trade routes, particularly the Grand Trunk Road. This historic 3655 km route, connecting diverse cultures across North India, provided a rich reference for the design, blending historical elements with modern elegance to create a unique dining experience.
Various elements were meticulously chosen to evoke the past. The space features handcrafted sandstone walls and oak wood accents, complemented by vibrant textiles and copper accents. The grand entrance, inspired by iconic Indian gateways, leads to an intimate lounge and a feature bar. The bar area’s water feature, set against a split-face textured stone backdrop, highlights the historical significance of water on trade routes.
The dining areas showcase full-height wall art of turbaned merchants and a live kitchen, adding to the immersive experience. The use of natural stone, vibrant colours, and handcrafted finishes creates a connection to the historical and cultural narratives of the era. The ceiling features rhythmic wooden log beams and suspended dhurries, symbolising the journey along the trade routes.
The colour palette balances bold and vibrant hues with neutral and earthy tones. Warm reds, deep oranges, and rich browns reflect the trades of the past, while softer beige and cream tones provide a calming backdrop. Oak wood and natural stone add depth, while copper accents introduce historical elegance.
Sustainability was a key consideration, with efforts to use locally sourced materials and support artisanal craftsmanship. Handcrafted finishes and durable, recyclable materials like copper align with a commitment to reducing environmental impact.
