This Hyderabad home by Chirag Design Studio is a remarkable testament to bespoke living, where eclecticism, craftsmanship and a strong sense of individuality seamlessly converge. The home owner’s vision was clear: to create a home that radiates charm, social energy and warmth—one that fosters interaction and conviviality while reflecting personal expression in every corner. With the challenge to blend these elements cohesively, our approach was to craft a sanctuary that encouraged both social engagement and intimate reflection, all while allowing the client’s unique style to shine.
From the outset, the brief called for a space that would feel as though no element was off the shelf. Every detail was to be carefully curated to align with the client’s preferences, ensuring that the design wasn’t just about functionality, but also about evoking a particular feeling. The intent was to create an intimate yet vibrant home where textures, colours and forms came together dynamically but harmoniously. The design sought to provide a layered spatial experience—one where eclecticism would shine without overwhelming the senses. Each element, from the custom furniture and handcrafted finishes to area-specific installations, was thoughtfully designed and integrated into the narrative of the space.
The design theme was guided by the concept of “Eclectic Controlled Chaos,” embracing maximalism at its core. The space was designed to be bold, but with a keen attention to balance. Key design elements such as the red leather wall paneling in the living area, with its intricate stitching and varied leather techniques, were integral to achieving this maximalist approach. The richness of textures and materials, like the custom furniture and vibrant color choices, added to the sense of layered complexity. Despite its boldness, every design decision was made with the intention of creating a space that felt harmonious, where each detail contributed to the larger narrative without creating a jarring experience.
The location of the project in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, known for its elegant homes, also played a significant role in shaping the design. Our goal was to create a space that not only resonated with the city’s rich cultural heritage but also redefined its elegance in a contemporary way. The eclectic design ethos blended seamlessly with the city’s sophisticated aesthetic, resulting in a home that felt both timeless and forward-thinking.
As one walks through the space, the design elements reveal themselves in unexpected and delightful ways. The formal living area features a leather-clad wall that conceals the entry to the dining area, adding an element of surprise and intrigue. The leather-wrapped ropes holding the cantilevered table and the custom leather finishes on the bar area emphasize the maximalist design while maintaining a sense of refinement. These elements are complemented by concrete-textured walls, which provide a minimalist backdrop, allowing the furniture, artwork, and artifacts to take center stage. The interplay between materials like leather, concrete, and wood adds depth and texture, enhancing the overall sensory experience of the space.
A standout feature in the design is the restored vintage Lambretta scooter, which, along with a blue leather duffle bag, speaks to the client’s love for travel and Italy. These elements serve not only as personal touches but also as symbols of the client’s identity and passions, further enriching the bespoke nature of the space.
In terms of spatial planning, the design effectively addresses the need for sociability and fluid interaction. The integration of a bar and crockery unit within the dining area creates a versatile space suitable for entertaining. This thoughtful design solution fosters three distinct social zones: the formal living room, the dining area, and the balcony, each designed to encourage different forms of social engagement. The seamless transitions between these areas invite organic movement, making the space both functional and inviting for gatherings.
One of the more challenging aspects of the Shikha project was the intricate detailing of leather throughout the home. Achieving the perfect finish, texture, and color required a significant amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Additionally, the installation of a 300 kg live-edge wooden cantilevered table, suspended by ropes, presented a major engineering challenge. Overcoming this required extensive research, development, and careful planning to ensure the table was both structurally sound and visually captivating.
The material palette of the project further enhances the design’s maximalist approach. Leather-clad walls with varied stitching techniques create a rich, tactile experience, while the concrete walls provide a minimalist canvas that highlights the furniture, artwork, and other design elements. The juxtaposition of these materials creates a dynamic contrast, allowing the eclectic mix of textures and colors to stand out while maintaining an overall sense of harmony and balance.
Ultimately, the Shikha project is a celebration of individuality and eclecticism, transforming these elements into an architectural language that speaks to the unique desires of the client. Every corner, every detail, and every piece of furniture contributes to a larger narrative of bespoke living, making the space a true reflection of the client’s personality and passions. The result is a home that feels personal, sophisticated, and timeless—an ode to the art of design and the joy of living in a space that is truly one of a kind.
