Here, until it’s time to return to the city: Anarr Gunjaria designs a holiday home in Nal Sarovar, Gujarat

“Designing a weekend home is a particularly enriching experience,” says Anarr Gunjaria of his namesake firm as he completes a 2,100 sq. ft. holiday home in Nal Sarovar, Gujarat. What pointers can you lay for designing a weekend home? Minimal? A soothing palette? Spaciousness? Above all of these, we believe it should be experiential, one that leaves you intrigued on each visit. There should be layers of design and character, revealing the more the longer you stay.

The blueprint is deliberate, featuring a living and dining quarter, a kitchen, two bedchambers, and verandahs that sort of blur into nature’s sprawl.

Upon crossing the threshold, stately red bull sculptures preside over the vestibule, where the dawn light infiltrates, casting chiaroscuro textures upon the artwork. Oak-finished wood and soft grey stone run underfoot. Rustic lime-plastered walls and grandiose apertures inject a visceral theatricality. A matte-black dining table adorned with hand-thrown ceramics becomes a visual cadence. Bipin Shinol’s monochromatic compositions lend an intellectual gravity, while an oversized bamboo luminaire floats above.

Each furnishing embodies a dualism—its form intrinsic to function, curated with precision to reflect the raw, unrefined elegance of the surroundings. Textiles, chosen for their haptic qualities, mimic the surrounding landscape, ensuring both durability and sensory allure.

The fabricated staircase, coupled with a monolithic platform, ascends with understated grandeur, offering an elevated viewpoint over the central living expanse.

The bedrooms, overlooking verdant gardens, are furnished with cane headboards, linen bedspreads, and jute rugs. The custom kitchen, clad in black granite and oak cabinetry, merges primordiality with contemporary finesse.

This design is experiential—landscaped groves, sunbathed terraces, and airy verandahs cultivate a profound connection between the inhabitant and the elemental world.
