Rarely are there homes in which every corner is adept at exhibiting artistic flair. DA Studiio’s Surat home builds such a case with an effortless grace and attention to detail. To balance aesthetics with functionality becomes the precedent for designing the home, the main door has fluid lines across a burgundy background, emphasizing on its simplicity and clean lines. The door opens up to the main foyer of the house, showing off a bronzed statue of a figure looking up, towards the double heighted volume topped with a skylight.
This allows the space to stay optimally sunlit throughout the day. The eye-catching design element of the double heighted space is an elegant light fixture which are a collection of gold “branches” holding pearl orbs. The clients are very socially active and desired a space which would be welcoming and comfortable. Thus, an open floor plan accommodates a living space, a dining space and a kitchen.
The plan allows easy movement and visual connectivity across spaces. The living space has a soothing color palette of browns against pale greys. The various shades of brown couches complement the ivory walls and patterned grey carpet with Persian motifs. The couches are supported with a pair of comfortable chairs with a bold splash of canary yellow cushioning. The wall mounted TV console has a deep black stone cladding as a backdrop, heightening the elegance of the space. The spaces are naturally lit during the day with efficient cross ventilation.
The dining space and the kitchen are done up in tones of deep red, bold yellow and matte black; an aesthetically pleasing color board completed by bringing in grey streaked white marble. The colors are used sans texture, allowing a visually appealing look. The dining space is adjacent to a free plan prayer space where the boundary is set with traditional Gujarati-style wooden columns and craved brackets. The Shri Yantra adds a salubrious vibe to the entire space.
The upper storeys are a private space consisting of bedrooms. Each room adheres to a particular theme with carefully curated furniture and furnishings. The designers believe that art is “a fundamental aspect of human expression and has the power to inspire, challenge, and transform both the artist and the viewer.” This ideology is plainly seen in their work.
Each of the rooms can be easily called a work of art in achieving a sense of beauty unique to each space. One of the rooms is furnished in tones of olive green and dark beige, invoking a modern yet minimalist feel. A cosy sitting nook with a colorful carpet and a statement set of multi-coloured lounge chair & coffee table provide a playful vibe to the space. Another room is resplendent in chocolate brown and chrome yellow, with a tertiary color of pale pink soft furnishings. The theme is completed with a black-&-white woven chevron rug.
The furniture pieces are understated yet elegant. A third bedroom is furnished in dark shades of blue and bright white furniture; a simple yet classic combination. The last bedroom flourishes with off white walls complementing furniture in dark, woody tones.
The obvious highlight of the room is a pair of wine-red suede armchairs. Each of the rooms is further equipped with bathing areas and walk in wardrobes, done up in the predominant color of the particular room. The other awe-inspiring elements are the light fixtures for each space, curated perfecting to match the colors and mood of each of the bedrooms.
