Crafting a meditative home in Dharampur’s Ashram premises, architect Karan Desai employs a soothing colour palette

Nestled within the serene ashram premises of Shrimad Rajchandraji in Dharampur, a three-bedroom second home emerges as a harmonious blend of meditative calm and modern luxury. Designed by Karan Desai to be a sanctuary for its owners, who seek respite while visiting Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, this abode exudes tranquility through its soothing palette and gently curved lines.

Design Concept and Client Desires

The crux of the design concept revolves around creating an atmosphere of meditative calm coupled with modern luxury. The clients, hailing from the US, desired a home where they could seek blessings in a Zen-like environment, free from clutter and loud features. Karan Desai, the Founder and Principal of Karan Desai: Architecture + Design, took on the challenge to fulfill these aspirations.

Mood Board and Implementation

Inspired by muted shades, curved lines, and a desire for a clutter-free space, Karan presented a mood board that resonated with the clients instantly. A singular neutral color scheme, rounded ceiling corners, and curved niches collectively create a cozy, cave-like ambiance. Despite limitations on changing the flooring, Karan opted for white SPC flooring to infuse freshness into the space.

Customized Furniture and Smart Design Choices

All furniture for the home was custom-created in-house, introducing the only statement color through a rust couch in the living room. Circular dining tables, benches, and thoughtful niches contribute to the theme of curves, fostering an open-concept living-dining and kitchen area. Smart storage solutions were incorporated to eliminate visual clutter.

Aesthetic Details and Design Twists

The staircase, a common feature in all 27 row houses, underwent a design twist to complement the home’s aesthetic. Winding railings and curved steps impart a dream-like vibe. A gold sculpture near the staircase adds a touch of serenity, while the space below is utilized for utility with a discreetly placed washing machine and dryer.

Personalized Spaces for Every Member

The first floor houses a minimal mandir along the glass wall, adhering to the client’s wishes. The master bedroom boasts bay window seating for unwinding, a seamless study table, and a muted palette for a Zen-like simplicity. The son’s room, with a terrace, caters to specific requirements with stucco walls, a flexible Murphy bed, and an artificial grass-covered terrace adorned with Vondom furniture.

Crafting an Oasis of Comfort and Luxury

By addressing the unique requirements of each family member within the chosen aesthetic, the home becomes an oasis of comfort, calmness, and luxury. Every element, from design choices to personalized spaces, reflects a thoughtful approach in creating a harmonious living environment.

For Karan Desai, this project holds special significance as Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, his spiritual mentor, might grace this home with His presence. The design not only fulfills the client’s desires but also resonates with a spiritual connection, making it an extraordinary endeavor.
