This Chennai home by House of Lines proves that lines are indeed fascinating

Lines, in their straightness, often seem mundane—unwavering paths that rarely pique interest. Their simplicity, devoid of curves, can lackluster at first glance. Yet, when these straight lines intersect, align, and juxtapose with one another, they have the power to make this intriguing. In their orderly repetition and starkness, they create a unique rhythm, a structured harmony that, while seemingly predictable, can form patterns both compelling and complex. It’s in their disciplined arrangement that they craft an abstract order that makes one contemplate. This Chennai home by House Of Lines seems to use this concept to create a space that is simple yet compelling.

A kota stone porch guides one inside the residence. The open layout on the ground floor holds a spacious living room, a modern kitchen, dining area and a serene bedroom. A patio at the back extends the living area out in the open.

“The clients brief was to make the house spacious with ample sunlight and ventilation. A lot of planning went in to achieve these goals in a very tight site” says the team at House of Lines. This directive profoundly influenced the overall concept, guiding the design team to overcome structural and spatial challenges through meticulous planning. The final design achieves the goal of maximizing light and airflow while addressing the site’s limitations.

A restrained colour palette, punctuated by selective highlights and pops ensured that every element contributes to the overall sense of openness.

Designing the bedrooms was particularly rewarding. The spatial arrangement achieved an efficient zoning of areas, including a completely enclosed wardrobe space, a bed and lounge area free from circulation, and a spacious bathroom with separate dressing and wet areas. This layout maximizes space utilisation and incorporates a decorative jali, which not only enhances privacy but also serves as a comfortable backrest and visual divider.

On the second floor, another master bedroom with access to a terrace offering panoramic views awaits.

Concrete finishes are used for the headboards, adding texture and depth. Black granite is strategically incorporated to create subtle contrasts, and black mild steel (MS) details enhance both form and function.

The colour palette predominantly features whites, complemented by earthy and cool tones of teakwood and concrete. Black accents in the form of MS details and granite provide contrast and visual interest, balancing the overall palette with subtle hints of drama.

By optimising spatial arrangements, the need for artificial cooling was reduced, and the house benefits from ample indirect sunlight and effective cross ventilation. These features collectively contribute to lower electricity consumption and a more eco-friendly home.

The project faced several structural challenges, largely due to suboptimal construction quality. However, with the support and encouragement of the residents, these obstacles were effectively addressed, allowing for a smooth design process and a successful outcome.
