An embodiment of an idyllic fusion between Scandinavian design and tropical flair, this cosy home designed by Akshay and Avani Khurana of Beyond Dreams and styled by Nikita Mahajan of Chalk White Home marries a modern aesthetic with timeless style to create an inviting atmosphere in Gurugram.
Natural materials, neutral tones, wood accents, and hints of tropical touches throughout, makes the home a statement in its own right. Situated in Gurugram, this 1250 sq ft two-bedroom home reflects the designer’s vision to craft functionality, minimalism and comfort in the abyss of Scandinavian design principles.
With accentuating natural materials and clean lines, cane, wood, stone and natural textiles sustain and impart an altogether new character to the home. A neutral colour palette with white, beige, grey, and earthy tones, paired with occasional pops of colour through decor and accessories concoct a warm and organic milieu. Setting foot in the living room attached to a balcony, as one basks in the glory of nudes, a set of 6 wall decals capture attention while ensuring it still retains its serene ambience. Towards the right, an array of natural materials and softer hues including wood and wicker dining set and console provide a warm base for the neutral and earthy tones that come together to form the perfect backdrop. Greens scattered around bestow accents of colour to the space.
Incorporating the simplicity and lightness of Scandinavian design with the vibrant and bold hues of the tropics, the master bedroom is a canvas in beige and black with wicker imparting texture and the planters and their motifs exuding a laid back charm while remaining chic and stylish. Following the footsteps of the master bedroom with a few antique additions, the guest room, a vision in white with hints of brown, takes one away from daily routine and helps find solace in the tranquil atmosphere. An ode to the client’s childhood and inspired by the tropics, this home stays true to its essence of being airy and light with the use of wicker.
Encompassing white and light-coloured walls, natural ash and teak wood finishes, woven wicker and earthy woven textiles, the overall design theme is kept fairly modern and synonymous throughout the house. Adding quirky elements like the antique angel artefacts in the master bedroom, the old school study desk and artwork in the guest room, breaks the monotony. Design is all about simplicity and functionality. A harmonious combination of these materials creates a serene and inviting atmosphere in the house.
While Scandinavian design tends to favour simplicity and minimalism, tropical design embraces boldness and vibrancy. Whether it’s a cosy afternoon spent curled up on the sofa or an evening entertaining guests, this scandi-tropical abode creates the perfect setting for every occasion. The designers Avani and Akshay conclude and say, “Designing spaces is a captivating art, where creativity and functionality intertwine. Each area offers unique opportunities to shape an environment that evokes emotions, inspires connections, and enhances the human experience. Our design philosophy is rooted in empathy, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. We believe in creating warmth in homes for people to create memories that exude peace and tranquillity.”
