Art and Abstract: An Art Deco fusion in a Jodhpur home by सprem Design

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant Kala Ghoda neighbourhood in Mumbai, this Jodhpur home, crafted by Sidhi Jain, embraces the dazzling allure of Art Deco while deviating from the conventional Rajasthani aesthetic. As the Founder and Principal Designer of सprem Design—a Jodhpur-based practice known for its bespoke, high-quality projects—Sidhi has carved a distinctive niche in the industry.

Every facet of her recent 1100 sq ft project reflects a meticulous fusion of creativity and functionality. The overarching design palette characterises the geometric and colour-filled flamboyance of Art Deco, while a range of grayscale tones and wooden furniture skillfully contrast it. The overall aesthetic reflects a moody ambience, aptly titled ‘Through The Art Era’.

As one steps inside, the striking custom-made blue door leaves a lasting impression. Avoiding the two-door approach, the designer merges the solidity of the main door with the transparency of a security door, prioritising both aesthetics and safety. The tailored full-height slits and geometric bars pay homage to the Art Deco theme while serving as ventilation vents.

Enticing guests into a world of artistic splendour, the entrance lobby includes a meticulously crafted patterned wall adorned with strategically placed mirrors with metal tints. This clever design element not only adds a touch of grandeur but also creates an illusion of spaciousness and visual intrigue. The living room effortlessly combines comfort and aesthetics, achieving a harmonious flow in design. Here, the graceful curves of Art Deco take centre stage, dictating the furniture language.

Crafting a cohesive atmosphere, the colour scheme both blends and introduces the highlight colours from other rooms. However, one element stands out—the bespoke light fixture. Sidhi reveals, “The hot and dry climate of Jodhpur called for a ceiling fan, but the homeowners also desired a chandelier in the living room. So we decided to opt for both, with the ceiling fan occupying the central space and complemented by a modern and visually delicate lighting fixture.

Moreover, the V-shaped chandelier is designed to create a soothing moonlight effect when all other lights are turned off.” Below, the reversible wooden swing serves as both a decorative element and a cosy spot for the elders of the home to unwind. The room is further adorned with a handpicked centre table from Delhi, a plush sofa, and the vibrant charm of rose-patterned wallpaper. A gracefully positioned Buddha statue emanates serenity and grace, completing the ambience.

The entrance lobby opens up to a serene temple, thoughtfully designed with custom storage beneath, arranged in a staggered pattern for visual interest. Above, suspended soothing bells create an atmosphere of tranquillity, offering a sacred space for homeowners to connect with their inner selves amidst the daily hustle and bustle of life. Wrapped in a refreshing mint green palette, the kitchen radiates a sense of freshness and vitality. Despite its compact size, thoughtful storage solutions are cleverly integrated, even within the tapering angles, ensuring ample room for culinary essentials.

To maintain a sleek and seamless aesthetic, the entrance to the kitchen features an intriguing tapering design, effectively concealing the storage shelves and state-of-the-art appliances. In keeping with the theme, this design element adds an extra touch of artistic patterns to the space. As a traditional family that values sitting down for shared meals, the homeowners opted for a dining area that eschews heavy furniture. To avoid a sense of emptiness, the design studio crafted a geometric ceiling design inspired by Art Deco patterns.

The bedrooms reflect the personalities of their inhabitants, with each room painted in a unique colour and identity. In the son’s bedroom, an enthralling balance is struck between his preferred moody dark blue hue, that envelops the top one-third of the room, and a contrasting soft grey shade below. The wall behind the son’s bed is intentionally left blank, serving as a canvas for his artistic creations, with recessed lighting strategically placed above to highlight his artwork.

Adding to the room’s artistic flair is the Cubism-inspired wardrobe design, accompanied by an adjacent mirror that amplifies the space’s playful and artsy atmosphere. With its clutter-free staging, the room serves as a versatile den. In contrast, the daughter’s room is a whimsical space dressed in soft hues of baby pink and matte grey. Designed to evoke a dreamy ambiance, the room is adorned with playful motifs of clouds, rainbows and starfish wardrobe handles. A unique home-shaped niche completes this creative cocoon.

On the other hand, the main bedroom posed a delightful challenge of striking a harmonious balance between the distinct personalities of the husband and wife. The result is an amalgamation of bold character and sophisticated elegance. Bathed in a warm palette of golden and beige tones, the room features a magnificent leafy wallpaper complemented with fabric bed-back, hinting at regal charm. Additionally, a hidden iron stand offers convenience and practicality while seamlessly blending with the room’s design.

The crowning achievement of this project undoubtedly lies in the intricate floral ceiling design. A bespoke adventure in itself, the design gracefully trails across the ceiling, culminating in the form of exquisite metal flowers or lights. Initially met with some trepidation from the homeowners, the ceiling is now an absolute favourite for both the studio and the family. From the bold blue entrance door to the reflective mirrors and handpicked elements, this Art Deco-inspired home is a curated tapestry of art and individuality.
