This beautiful mountain home in Mukteshwar, Nainital, is a tranquil retreat amidst nature’s breathtaking wonders. Designed by Noida based Interior & Architecture company AMU Design Studio, this beautiful property belongs to a Merchant Navy Captain Ashok Mehra whose home town is Almora, Uttarakhand.
Nestled among towering peaks, this mountain home provides a harmonious blend of comfort and awe-inspiring interiors. Imagine waking up to the gentle caress of fresh mountain air, surrounded by lush green hills. Every room in this house is designed to face the beautiful surroundings of the town Mukteshwar.
The inspiration for this home was the mountains that are surrounding the entire place. Principal designer Rohit Chaudhary with Architect Vipendra Chauhan had around 2000 square feet of area to design and so they wanted something that looks wide enough to give a glimpse of mountains from every corner of the house. They created a double-ceiling living room to give this house the look and feel of a villa.
Right from the rustic beds to the live edge dining table, every detail creates a sanctuary where one can unwind, find solace, and reconnect with the serenity of the natural world. Whether it’s the authentic kumauni fireplace or the wonderful Kumauni artwork on the front wall, every little thing in this home encapsulates the perfect blend of culture and nature.
“The theme of this house is ‘elegant country theme’. It is a combination of classic vintage and modern. The flooring is done in limestone cement finish tiles and the walls are done in a ‘Pale Sisal’ (L-155) Premium Emulation paint and the wallpapers are from Wallart. The authentic fireplace is made using natural stone tiles,” shares Rohit Chaudhary.
The living room is adorned with customized furniture from AMU Design Studio and the beautiful rug is from a local shop in Delhi. Since the focus was more on the simple aspect of a home, they did not fill the room with too many artifacts & décor pieces.
The rustic dining table is hand-made just like the beds by the local carpenter in Haldwani. The ceiling lamp is from a local vendor in Delhi. The fresh floral print wallpaper gives a dramatic look to the otherwise tranquil place. Right opposite the dining area is the fireplace which is again made with natural stone in an old Kumauni style.
The pretty lounge room in pink is a mix of natural hues and modern handicrafts. The sofa set is designed by AMU Design Studio while the center table is a work of art by the local carpenter. The beautiful rug, hanging mat, and bamboo basket are handicrafts from a local shop.
The beauty of the master bedroom lies in its simplicity. Right from the handmade bed to the elegant side tables, everything here looks simple yet stunning. The light-tone wallpaper on the ceiling was a last-minute installation as the focus was more on the outside than the inside.
The beds in both the guest and master rooms are designed with simplicity to give a natural feel to the space. A little detailing was given on the walls with the help of wallpaper. Rest everything is kept the way it was without interfering much with the design.
The client’s daughter Dhristi Mehra is a growing teen and so her parents wanted her room to look more like a youth’s space than an actual kids’ room. In order to give her some extra space and comfort, the designers created a loft bed in her room.
Sharing the standout feature about this home, Rohit concludes, “The entire living room area is designed to stand out from the rest of the house. The idea behind keeping the double ceiling height in the living room was to give an open and wider look to the place. One can see the beautiful mountain range from the living room as well as from the stairs above. The living area is further star-studded with the mega-size hand-made painting by a local artist Manoj Goswami. Not to forget the giant chandelier customized by one of our vendors in Delhi.”
