In an era where retail spaces increasingly feel like Instagram backdrops, how does design create a lasting impression beyond the lens? Sameer Madan’s new flagship store, designed by Karigar Design Studio, proves that theatricality and functionality can coexist. The space transforms the traditional shopping experience into an intimate fashion show, where customer becomes both, the spectator and the star.
Virtual Walkthrough of the Store
The journey begins at the entrance, where a striking black-and-white palette instantly sets the tone. Glossy tiles on the floor amplify the sense of luxury, while reflective surfaces and strategically placed mirrors create a play of light and space.
At the heart of the store lies its pièce de résistance—a runway-inspired ramp that doubles as a dramatic design feature and a functional stage. This central element not only elevates the spatial drama but also creates a unique shopping experience, inviting customers to interact with the space in a dynamic way. “We wanted to redefine the typical store walkthrough,” explains Anjali Aggarwal, Founder & Principal Architect of Karigar Design Studio. “The ramp isn’t just an aesthetic choice—it’s a stage where fashion comes alive, turning everyday shopping into a curated experience.”
Further into the store, sleek fixtures subtly display the brand’s collections, illuminated by ambient lighting that highlights the intricate details of each piece. Towards the rear, an intimate seating area with plush fabrics and warm lighting provides a cozy setting for fittings and discussions.
The Brief & Design Concept
The client’s brief was to encapsulate the Sameer Madan brand’s ethos—modern, glamorous, and sophisticated—within a space that balances visual impact with customer comfort. This vision inspired a design that marries sleek finishes, geometric patterns, and reflective surfaces with a layout that serves as both a retail space and an experiential stage.
Challenges and Solutions
The design team faced the complex challenge of balancing high-impact visual elements with practical retail needs. Their solution was to create distinct zones that flow naturally into each other. The main display area features sleek fixtures that frame the clothing like art installations, while an intimate fitting area at the rear offers plush seating and warm ambient lighting—a thoughtful contrast to the dramatic main space.
Sustainability Considerations
Sustainability wasn’t sacrificed for style. The store incorporates energy-efficient LED systems and locally sourced materials, proving that luxury retail can be environmentally conscious. The lighting design, in particular, demonstrates this balance, using dimmable strips and strategic spotlighting to create atmosphere while minimizing energy consumption.
What sets this project apart is its understanding of modern retail psychology. While many high-end stores can feel intimidating, this space uses its theatrical elements to invite interaction. The reflective surfaces and geometric patterns create a sense of openness, while textured wall panels and soft furnishings add warmth to the monochromatic scheme.
The flagship store’s success lies in its ability to turn shopping into performance art without losing sight of its primary function. Each element—from the high-sheen flooring to the integrated ceiling lighting—works in concert to create an experience that’s both dramatic and approachable.
This reimagining of retail space by Karigar Design Studio suggests a future where shopping isn’t just about transactions but about transformation!
