Salankar Pashine and Associates embrace rustic minimalism with a touch of flamboyance in this Nagpur residence

Tucked away from the urban surroundings of Nagpur, stands this 7500 sq ft farmhouse enveloped with lush greenery, with the stunning view of the Chandrabhaga reservoir. Doctors by profession, the homeowners wanted this rural retreat to be a getaway from city life. Contemplating upon this brief, Ar. Anurag Pashine and Ar. Pallavi Pashine, Founders and Principal Architects of Salankar Pashine and Associates, “We  envisioned a home that took advantage of the lake views, celebrated their natural surroundings, and created a restful environment for the inhabitants.” As a result, the design commands an overall organic mood while striking an equilibrium between rustic minimalism layered with elements of flamboyance, reflecting the clients’ personalities.

Inspired predominantly by nature, the design language is informed by earthy colours, plenty of natural light, and artistic decor. Poised and uninterrupted, draped in clean and sleek geometry, this farmhouse, in many ways, mirrors the quintessential scenes of contemporary interiors, where conscious splashes of bright reds, yellows, and greens introduce a new take on eclectic timelessness.

From the entry to the outdoor pool and the gazebo, the home is striving to constantly be in dialogue with the outdoors, creating an experience of living amidst the serenity of nature. The living area, for instance, frames the picturesque surroundings, incorporating large glazings on all sides. The sofas in contrasting bright red and soft green stand out to draw attention, while the simple elements like matte finish tile flooring and wooden beams on ceilings make the space functional, uncomplicated and rustic. The living area seamlessly extends to the bar, making a holistic public zone, ideal for a weekend home.

Adjacent to the living is the dining area, dressed in neutral tones, serving as an intimate space for family gatherings. Moving ahead, the kitchen defies the norms of being a compact functional space, and instead fosters an airy ambience by connecting with the outdoors. The nature-inspired green hues pop as accents, steering away from the monochrome trend in modern culinary spaces.

Unlike the communal areas of the home celebrating colours, the bedrooms take a completely minimalist direction, with subdued tones and textures dominating the palette. The master bedroom, nods to the neutral palette and natural materials- the chevron wooden flooring & the rafters running along the ceilings. The floral wallpaper acts as a subtle accent, amidst the clean lines and clutter free aesthetic narrative.

The son’s bedroom, on the other hand, follows a stark monochromatic scheme, where white plastered walls contrast with the black furnishings. The other bedroom goes all white, where dark wooden flooring anchors the space. However, a sense of rustic simplicity emanates through all these bedrooms, becoming the underlying theme of the entire home.

Designed to be a countryside getaway, the recreational areas occupy a significant part of the layout within this two-storey house. Although these areas follow an earthy palette(as other areas of the home), occasional bursts of colours bring an energetic atmosphere – be it the vibrant artwork in the central living area, the red jali walls in the outdoor gazebo, or the ochre recliner sofas in the home theatre.

This rural escape artfully blends rustic allure with modern design elements, marrying colours with the soothing embrace of nature. Through its seamless integration with the surroundings, this retreat beckons as a serene sanctuary, inviting homeowners to immerse themselves in the calming experience of rural living.
