In the bustling industrial area of Worli, Mumbai, Merchant 13 showcases the seamless fusion of Indian ethnic charm with minimalist modern interiors, transforming a narrow office into a functional and culturally rich workspace. Spanning 1,400 sq ft, this office designed by Studio Jane Designs is an ode to Indian heritage, reimagined through a contemporary lens. With its roots in a shared passion for Indian aesthetics between the client and design team, the space combines functionality with cultural richness, overcoming the constraints of an older building to create a cohesive and inspiring workspace.
A Grand Welcome
The experience begins at the marble-clad reception area, a striking yet understated introduction to the office. A Satvario marble console anchors the space, doubling as a functional element for the receptionist and a cosy waiting area. This central hub seamlessly connects the office’s functional zones, setting the tone for the rest of the space.
The Directors’ Wing
To the right of the reception lies the directors’ shared cabin, equipped with an ensuite washroom and adjacent to a small conference room. The cabin’s transparent glass partitions feature switchable opacity, balancing privacy with openness. Opposite, a smaller private cabin with its own independent entrance serves as a fire exit, creatively repurposed without compromising functionality.
The Common Workspace
Behind the reception, a fourteen-seater cubicle area is arranged linearly to maximise the narrow layout. Adjacent to this space is the main common room, where functionality meets design through seamlessly integrated workstations and greenery. Strategically placed washrooms, including a common washroom near the entrance and an ensuite shared between director cabins, ensure optimal circulation and accessibility.
Design Language: Ethnic Elegance Meets Modern Minimalism
The Indian ethnic theme is evident in every detail. Earthy tones of grey, beige, golden, brown and white dominate the palette, enhanced by green accents from life-sized indoor plants. Materials such as marble, veneer, cane, linen and rubblestone bring natural textures to the forefront, while brass accents add a traditional charm.
Custom furniture optimises space, with directors’ cabins featuring concealed storage and washroom doors for a clean, uncluttered look. The narrow windows have been reimagined with larger frames and louvred blinds, improving light and ventilation while maintaining a traditional aesthetic. Linear lighting, extending from the entrance to the staff area, elongates the space and provides continuity.
Materiality and Detailing
Flooring transitions between seamless finishes in common areas and luxurious marble in cabins, adding visual interest and functionality. Veneer walnut finishes, flex stone walls, and wooden panelling lend warmth and texture, while floor-to-ceiling window frames inspired by traditional Indian designs merge heritage with modernity.
Overcoming Challenges with Creativity
Working within the constraints of an older building, the team navigated issues like narrow windows, restrictive structural elements, and dated infrastructure. Heavy ceiling beams were skillfully integrated into the design, becoming a defining feature. The result is a space that feels open and airy, despite its compact footprint, with custom solutions ensuring functionality at every turn.
Merchant 13 is a testament to Studio Jane Designs’ ability to blend cultural heritage with modern design principles. Through meticulous spatial planning, custom furniture, and an unwavering commitment to aesthetics, the office transforms challenges into opportunities. The result is a workspace that balances luxury, productivity, and a deeply rooted Indian identity, making Merchant 13 a striking example of contemporary design inspired by tradition.
