A geometric brick exterior, meticulously arranged in a rhythmic pattern of recesses and protrusions, stands in complete harmony with the vibrant yellow metal box that appears to protrude from its core. This home in the quaint suburbs of Kozhikode, Kerala, is deliberately designed to stand out and inspire intrigue and a sense of exploration. Designed by Architects Aslam Karadan and Sham Salim of the eponymous Kozhikode-based practice Aslam.Sham Architects, this unique residence is designed to stand out rather than blend in.
Both Aslam and Sham believe in the profound impact that thoughtfully designed spaces can have on people’s lives. “We are committed to creating environments that inspire, uplift, and endure.”
The Yellow Box – the home as christened by the architects — reimagines the boundaries of design, where geometric shapes and intricate patterns blend in a dazzling display of visual innovation. The home’s defining feature is the contrast between an angular, oblique brick veil and a bright yellow metal box that protrudes, creating a striking visual impact.
“Muhad and Shermina, our clients, presented us with a unique challenge: a 10-cent plot with an irregular shape, nestled in a densely populated urban area. The site, situated at a T-junction with roads on two sides, demanded a design that would not only stand out from its mundane surroundings but also make a bold statement. The clients’ vision was clear: to create a residence that would defy the monotony of the typical concrete houses that dominated the neighborhood,” explains Sham.
Built on a compact 10-cent plot, this 5BHK residence balances openness and privacy. The yellow metal box extends into the interiors and assumes the form of a striking sculptural staircase. “But these elements are not just for the visual impact, they serve their functional purpose — the brick wall creates private pockets of garden spaces for the bedrooms and the metal tubes provide the shading and privacy for the balcony.”
Inside, the space boasts a rugged, minimalist aesthetic that exudes understated sophistication. Grey walls, stripped of superfluous ornamentation, provide a canvas for the interplay of light and shadow, while exposed structural elements and accents add touch of raw, urban edge.
“The client’s affinity for simplicity and intuitive functionality inspired a design language that embodies rustic elegance and seamless connectivity. The architectural framework became an integral part of the interior aesthetic, with distinctive features such as the coffer-slab ceiling and freestanding steel staircase,” says the architect when quizzed about the subtle interior language.
The furniture and accents take a cue from the monochromatic backdrop and makes a subtle appearance in the décor. Interludes of understated green and beige add to the sophisticated colour palette. It’s interesting to note the balance Sham and Aslam have managed to achieve with this space. Richly crafted wooden furniture brings a tactile, human quality to the room, while intricately carved wooden panels add a layer of visual intrigue. As these natural elements meld with the industrial backdrop, the space transcends its minimalist roots, evolving into a nuanced, multi-layered environment that celebrates the beauty of contrast and the harmony of opposites.
