There are just trees as far as you can see, outlined by the mountain range — the most aspirational form of shelter indeed. Perhaps it’s the distance from a monotonous life or an inner energy that connects me to my ancestors. Or it might just be the power of nature. I haven’t quite figured out the reason for my affinity for homes like this one by Harshit Puram and Parikshit Linga of Okno Modhomes in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Far from our current, supposedly developed habitation, and into our natural surroundings — or at least what we once called ‘our’ habitat (centuries ago) — this 300 sq ft home is designed to reconnect one with the elemental aspects of life.
Reflections, as christened by the residents, is a shimmering mirage dissolving into the verdant landscapes. A careful selection of materials and design elements mirrors the natural surroundings, letting the landscape merge with the indoors and creating an illusionary built form that extends organically from the environment.
The suspended living space conjures a sensation of floating among the trees. The expansive deck, offering panoramic views and accompanied by the gentle rustling of leaves, fosters an intimate connection between the residents and the forest surroundings.
An open-plan living area blurs the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls welcome the lush greenery inside. This integration extends onto an outdoor deck, featuring a cozy lounge area and a jacuzzi, ideal for stargazing on clear nights.

The bedroom is a secluded cocoon, offering serene views of the surrounding forest. Adorned with natural materials like warm wood finishes and soft textiles, it is just a secure nest. A unique motorised sliding bed transforms the space into a celestial observatory, where one can drift into dreams under the canopy of stars. Above, something imperceptible to our naked eyes in the city, brightens up this sky. It is almost as if there is an alternate sky.
The mirrored exterior of Reflections not only creates a striking visual effect but also serves a practical purpose. By reflecting the natural surroundings, it minimises the visual footprint of the structure by hiding amidst the landscape. The use of sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems ensures that the home is not only beautiful (in layman’s term) but is environmentally friendly.
