Perched at an impressive elevation of approximately 110 ft above the ground, this exquisite 3000 sq ft residence embodies the essence of a cherished childhood memory. Designed and executed by co-founders and principal architects of Workers Of Art, Rahul Mathew and Priya Rose, this residence serves as a second home for the Chennai-based family, offering a perfect retreat for holidays, relaxation, and occasional work stays.
Inspired by the client’s vivid recollections of architectural bookmarks discovered during his travels across the scenic Italian countryside, the design beautifully integrates the international appeal with the surrounding context of Edakochi, Kochi, Kerala. Capturing the essence of the dreamlike landscapes of Kumbalangi- the backwaters, the terrain, and the greenery beyond, and transforming them into a design narrative, the home creates a lasting impression of serenity, comfort, and a desire to explore and unravel the space.
The duo, Rahul Mathew and Priya Rose, has drawn significant inspiration from the breathtaking views that envelop the site, resulting in a material and colour palette that seamlessly blends the interiors with the natural splendour beyond. The space transcends the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, unifying the built structure with the surrounding landscape and weaving a harmonious tapestry that tells a story rooted in the location.
To manifest these intentions, a soothing colour scheme was curated, drawing from the hues of the natural surroundings. The walls are coated with a natural mortar comprising an aerated lime base, imbuing them with a transformative quality that responds to changing lighting conditions and maintains a cooler ambient temperature. Throughout the residence, Travertine marble flooring is elegantly employed, ensuring a seamless and cohesive aesthetic. In certain areas, the floors and walls are treated with identical materials, blurring the boundaries and creating an illusion of spaciousness.
The bathrooms exude a sense of spaciousness and class, becoming a personal oasis for each resident. The collaboration with esteemed partners- Fima Carlo Frattini, added a touch of excellence to the home. Fima Carlo Frattini, the renowned Italian brand, provided exquisite bathroom fittings, combining forward-thinking design with timeless elegance. The layout of the home is centered around a long corridor that serves as the backbone, guiding inhabitants through different zones.
Divided conceptually into two main areas, the corridor distinguishes between the day and night zones. The day zone, oriented towards the backwaters, embraces unobstructed views of the horizon and basks in the warm embrace of the sun from dawn to dusk. It encompasses an outdoor deck seamlessly transitioning into an indoor living area and two bedrooms, each with its own balcony that overlooks the mesmerizing water views. Further along the corridor lies the dining room, sharing a wall with the kitchen, where cold-rolled sheet cladding enhances the connections and echoes the dynamicity of the views on the opposite end.
As the transition is made into the night zone, the corridor reaches the central entry, connecting to the foyer. Here, an antique wooden mask welcomes visitors, presenting them with a choice between immersing themselves in the communal day zone for entertainment or retreating to the more secluded areas for solitude and slumber. The second half of the residence comprises the master bedroom, featuring a spacious walk-in wardrobe, an attached bathroom, and an elegant powder room.
Every area of the residence boasts keen attention to detail, catering to the specific needs and desires of its inhabitants. From the integrated study table unit within the master bedroom’s headboard to the vanity seamlessly incorporated into the elongated bathroom counter in one of the other bedrooms, every element has been thoughtfully designed to enhance functionality.
In the bathrooms, wooden composite panels adorn the ceilings, cleverly concealing trap doors and harmonizing with the custom-designed wooden accent furniture pieces, thus preserving the integrity of the design language. Meticulous attention has been given to lighting design, ensuring that it caters to the varying moods and purposes of the space, be it setting the ambiance or facilitating entertainment. This masterful interplay of materiality, light, and colour results in a delightful visual journey for the user as they traverse the layered walls of the residence.
Deluxe brass and matte black fittings from Fima Carlo Frattini elegantly complement the Terrazzo slabs that envelop the entire volume. In situ cement counters and sinks add a contemporary flair, while carefully curated bathroom accessories, such as soap trays, towel rods, and hooks, enhance the overall aesthetic. Strategically positioned mirrors (both full-length and organically shaped) reflect the outdoor views and amplify the sense of space. Organic-shaped rugs and patterned soft furnishings inspired by the surrounding environment add depth and character to the interior. Cement moldings with rounded edges subtly break the monotony of the walls and introduce captivating plays of light and shadow.
This home is an enchanting fusion of space, materiality, and atmosphere, designed to evoke a sense of wonder and tranquility. It pays homage to cherished memories while establishing a strong bond with the surrounding landscape. The carefully selected materials, thoughtful planning, and attention to detail culminate in an ethereal living space that enriches the daily lives of its occupants, inviting them to savour every moment!
