reD (research II enquiry II design) is a studio that emphasises research and inquiry as the driving force behind their design process. The three principals Maithili, Rajiv and Ekta, although trained as architects, prefer to view their practice as a multidisciplinary confluence of architects, interior designers, graphic designers, product designers, urban planners, and even stylists. They believe that true creativity emerges from the collaboration of these diverse disciplines.
PROJECT IN FOCUS – ARTESIA
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Typology: Residential
Year of completion: 2023
Design Concept: Hidden layers, multifunctional spaces, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow
Material Palette: A mix of stones in geometric patterns, neutral backdrops with woven textures, hand-painted asymmetrical tiles, and a plethora of varied materials, homogenised seamlessly
What we heart: It’s adaptability and layered spaces, concealing and revealing as the need arises—guest rooms, Murphy beds, bathrooms, door panels or even televisions
This 3-bedroom home by reD, reconfigured from a 4-bedroom apartment, features a multipurpose den that can double as a guest room. The entry vestibule leads to a sculptural console and custom armchair. The living room has a formal seating area and a bar with a metallic cabinet concealing a TV and bar equipment. The dining area features a 10-seater table with a forest of legs visible through the tinted glass top. The outdoor deck has a breakfast nook and casual seating with a swing. The den can be closed off and has a hidden murphy bed. Other highlights include the master bedroom’s four-poster bed, the older daughter’s monochromatic room with a 3D wall, and the younger daughter’s room with a curved steel desk.
