Set within an age-old context, the workspace for India’s leading designer fashion brand AK-OK by Anamika Khanna in Alipore, Kolkata is a search for balance between the old and new, classic and contemporary and muted yet vibrant. Located in the larger premises consisting of outdoor recreational spaces and a tailoring block, the main office space is an existing three-storeyed structure with charming Art Deco details from a bygone era. The 9,500 sq ft studio and office space illustrates how conventional boundaries of design can be pushed within an adaptive reuse context, while also paying homage to the existing built form. A palette of naturally distressed materials, which embrace the wabi-sabi of life in the adaptive reuse context come together to create delightful corners and artful spaces.
